Biophysics Seminar Series - Erez Braun (Technion) From Genotype to Phenotype: a physics perspective Jadwin 111 · 12:00 p.m.– 1:00 p.m.Condensed Matter Seminar, Yigal Meir, "Kondo Physics in Quantum Point Contacts" Quantum point contacts (QPCs) are the basic building blocks of any mesoscopic structure, and display quantized conductance, reflecting the quantization of the number of transparent channels. An additional feature, coined the "0.7 anomaly", has been observed in almost all QPCs, and has been a subject of intensive debate in the last couple of decades. I will demonstrate that this feature can be attributed to the emergence of a quasi-localized state at the QPC, which explains all the phenomenology of the effect. I will describe the theory behind a new experiment which measured the conductance through length-tunable QPC. The experimental findings support the picture of the localized state(s). Interestingly, with increasing QPC length, it was found that both the 0.7 anomaly and the zero bias peak in the differential conductance oscillate and periodically split with channel length, supporting the idea that the number of the localized states increases with length, leading to an alternating Kondo effect. PCTS Seminar Room · 1:15 p.m.– 2:30 p.m.High Energy Theory Seminar - Chi-Ming Chang, Harvard - "1/16 BPS States in N=4 SYM" "In this talk I will discuss the problem of counting 1/16 BPS operators in N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory at weak coupling. I will present the complete set of 1/16 BPS operators in the infinite N limit, which agrees with the counting of free BPS multi-graviton states in the gravity dual AdS5xS5. I will then present an conjecture that all 1/16 BPS operators in N=4 SYM are of the multi-graviton form, and give numerical evidences for this conjecture. I will discuss the implication of the conjecture and the seeming failure in reproducing the entropy of large 1/16 BPS black holes in AdS5. This talk is based on 1305.6314 with Xi Yin."
