Importing Unicode records (with diacritics or original scripts) from the Main Catalog into EndNote 8

You have to use EndNote 8, and connect directly to the catalog. Filters can only import plain ASCII text, even in Unicode-enabled EndNote 8.

Making the Connection UTF-8

  1. Open EndNote - When the Select a Reference Library window opens, hit CANCEL.
  2. Click on Edit->Connection Files->Open Connection Manager
  3. Click on Princeton University and then the edit button.
  4. Click on Connection Settings. In the Text box choose: UTF-8.
  5. Click on File->Save as and type in Princeton U Unicode.enz and click on Save.  (You can give it another name if you wish).
  6. Close out all the windows. Click on File->Connect and Princeton U Unicode.
  7. You can now perform searches.

Displaying Downloaded Records using Unicode

  1. Open Edit->Preferences, and click on Display Fonts
  2. Choose both for Library Display Font and General Display Font a full Unicode font, such as Arial Unicode MS.
  3. Click Apply and then OK.

Downloading Original Scripts into Endnote 8 Libraries

  1. First, decide on a field you wish to use for the Original script data. The following is an option creating a separate Original Scripts field.
  2. Open Edit->Preferences, and click on Reference Types.
  3. Click on Modify Reference Types and choose Books.
  4. Scroll down to Custom 1, and type Original scripts next to it; click OK.
  5. In Edit->Connection Files, choose Edit "Princeton U Unicode" or the name you gave the connection before.
  6. Click on Templates, and choose as Reference Type Book.
  7. Scroll down to the bottom, place your cursor after the last character in the last field (i.e., $uURL in field 856), and hit return
  8. In the new field, type 880 in the very first box, and then $a$b… in the second box. Be careful not to delete (invisible) end-of-field characters. Repeat for $c, $e, $f, $g, $n, $p, $q, $r, $t, $v, $x, $y, $z. Most of the information you need should be in $a, $b and $c.
  9. Move your cursor to after a in $a$b, and click on Insert Field; choose "Original scripts" or the name you choose in 4. Move the cursor to after b and repeat. The line should now read $aOriginal scripts$bOriginal scripts etc.
  10. Click Save. If you now find records with original scripts attached, these will be all entered into the "Original scripts" field of your Endnote library. Note that it is not possible to separate the various types of data (author, title, publisher) in a meaningful way.
