Archbald is a borough in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is named for James Archbald, who was the first mayor of Carbondale, Pennsylvania. The population was 6,220 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Archbald is located at 41°29′37″N 75°33′5″W / 41.49361°N 75.55139°W / 41.49361; -75.55139 (41.493481, -75.551478)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 16.8 square miles (43.5 km2), of which 16.8 square miles (43.5 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2) (0.12%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 6,220 people, 2,470 households, and 1,756 families residing in the borough. The population density was 369.9 people per square mile (142.8/km²). There were 2,594 housing units at an average density of 154.2/sq mi (59.5/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.65% White, 0.27% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.02% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.40% of the population.

There were 2,470 households out of which 29.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.7% were married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, 28.9% were non-families. . 25.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the borough the population was spread out with 22.7% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.5 males.
