Avondale is a census-designated place (CDP) in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States, on the West Bank of the Mississippi River. The population was 5,441 at the 2000 census. It is part of the New OrleansMetairieKenner Metropolitan Statistical Area.



Avondale(AVD) is located at 29°54′16″N 90°12′15″W / 29.90444°N 90.20417°W / 29.90444; -90.20417 (29.904506, -90.204216)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.8 square miles (15.0 km²), of which, 5.4 square miles (14.1 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.9 km²) of it (6.04%) is water.


As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 5,441 people, 1,726 households, and 1,439 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 998.8 people per square mile (385.5/km²). There were 1,811 housing units at an average density of 332.4/sq mi (128.3/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 63.70% White, 20.25% African American, 0.53% Native American, 12.20% Asian, 1.58% from other races, and 1.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.80% of the population.

There were 1,726 households out of which 38.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.8% were married couples living together, 15.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 16.6% were non-families. 13.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.15 and the average family size was 3.44.
