Cantua Creek (formerly, Cantua[1] and Cantuna[2]) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fresno County, California, United States. As of the 2000 census, the CDP population was 655. Cantua Creek is located 11 miles (18 km) south-southwest of Tranquillity,[1] at an elevation of 295 feet (90 m).[2]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.8 square miles (9.8 km²), all of it land.

History

The Cantua post office operated in 1888, and from 1890 to 1892.[1] The Cantua Creek post office opened in 1941.[1]

Demographics

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 655 people, 141 households, and 131 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 172.7 people per square mile (66.7/km²). There were 154 housing units at an average density of 40.6/sq mi (15.7/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 42.60% White, 0.15% Black or African American, 0.61% Native American, 52.06% from other races, and 4.58% from two or more races. 93.74% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 141 households out of which 66.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 80.1% were married couples living together, 3.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 6.4% were non-families. 2.8% of all households were made up of individuals and none had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 4.51 and the average family size was 4.52.
