Carthage is a town in Moore County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Moore County[3].

Geography

Carthage is located at 35°19′46″N 79°24′31″W / 35.32944°N 79.40861°W / 35.32944; -79.40861 (35.329441, -79.408475)[4].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.9 square miles (15.2 km²), of which, 5.8 square miles (15.1 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.68%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,871 people, 653 households, and 440 families residing in the town. The population density was 321.3 people per square mile (124.1/km²). There were 768 housing units at an average density of 131.9/sq mi (50.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 67.72% White, 30.84% African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 0.53% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.86% of the population.

There were 653 households out of which 28.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% were married couples living together, 14.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.6% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the town the population was spread out with 21.5% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 22.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 86.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.1 males.
