County Mayo (Irish: Contae Mhaigh Eo) is one of the twenty-six counties of the Republic of Ireland, and one of the thirty-two counties of Ireland. Located in the province of Connacht, the county was named after the village of Mayo (from Irish: Maigh Eo meaning "plain of the yew trees"), which is now generally known as Mayo Abbey. The county has a population of 123,839.[1] The county's main towns are Castlebar and Ballina, respectively located in the centre and in the northeast of the county.
