Elon (formerly known as Elon College) is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. It is part of the Burlington, North Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. The current population estimate (2008) is 7,060.[1] The town of Elon is home to Elon University. The town was called "Elon College" until the college known as Elon College became Elon University. The town then changed its name officially to Elon. Downtown Elon is home to The Shops at Elon.



Elon is located at 36°5′50″N 79°30′44″W / 36.09722°N 79.51222°W / 36.09722; -79.51222 (36.097135, -79.512102).[2]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.4 square miles (8.8 km²), all of it land.


As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 6,738 people, 1,903 households, and 1,141 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,991.7 people per square mile (769.7/km²). There were 2,004 housing units at an average density of 592.4/sq mi (228.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 87.61% White, 10.24% African American, 0.04% Native American, 1.02% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.59% of the population.

There were 903 households out of which 26.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 6.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.0% were non-families. 22.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.94.
