Florence is a town in Rankin County, Mississippi, United States. As of the 2000 census, the town population was 2,396. It is part of the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area.



Florence is located at 32°09′14″N 90°07′19″W / 32.153782°N 90.122031°W / 32.153782; -90.122031 (32.153782, -90.122031).[1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.9 square miles (15.2 km2), all of it land.[citation needed]

The United States Census Bureau, being almost seven years out of date, truly does not show the growth of both the population and current city limits. Florence has nearly doubled in size in all aspects.[citation needed] The current city limits have grown northward towards Richland, which is the same as Richland-Florence. Florence is also known as "The Backdoor to Brandon" because of the residential boom growing ever closer to the locale of the Brandon city limits. Brandon lies an estimated 15 miles to the east of Florence. The city has grown westward, and will continue to expand towards the Pearl River,eventually stopping at the Pearl River, which separates Rankin County from Hinds County.


As of Saturday, 03, December 2005, there were a tract population of 5,770 people, 2,376 households, and 2,144 families residing in the town. The population density was 157.3/km2 (407.6/sq mi). There were 1,054 housing units at an average density of 179.3/sq mi (69.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 88.69% White, 10.31% African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.13% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.13% of the population.[citation needed]
