Guilford is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The town is on the east border of the county. The population was 3,046 at the 2000 census.[1]

History

The land was purchased from the Oneida tribe in 1785. The town was first settled around 1787. One of the first settlements were in what is now known as East Guilford, by the Mercereau brothers(who were actually Revolutionary War spies fo George Washington). They built a mill on Guilford Creek in Indian Orchard Falls, along the Catskill Turnpike.

Guilford was formed from the town of Oxford in 1813 as "Eastern." The name became "Guilford" in 1817. The town was called by an older name, "Fayette," for the early part of its history during the time it was in Tioga County.

One of the most beautiful spots in Guilford is Guilford Lake, which was at one time called Guilford Pond. There was actually a tornado that hit in Guilford around Guilford Lake at the turn of the century, that knocked down tons of tree limbs and trees.

However, Guilford is especially known for The Angels Inn, otherwise known as The Pillars. Unfortunately, this building in in desperate need of some tender love and care currently, however it is one of the most beautiful buildings in the area. It used to have a carved wooden angel that hung above the door, but in the 50's it was sold for lots of money. However, Guilford currently has a replica of the angel on display for those who want to see it.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 61.9 square miles (160.3 km²), of which, 61.7 square miles (159.7 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.6 km²) of it (0.36%) is water.

The east town line is the border of Otsego County. The border is marked by the Unadilla River.

New York State Route 8 is a north-south highway paralleling the Unadilla River.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 3,046 people, 1,181 households, and 838 families residing in the town. The population density was 49.4 people per square mile (19.1/km²). There were 1,462 housing units at an average density of 23.7/sq mi (9.2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.64% White, 0.66% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.23% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.89% of the population.
