Jefferson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Nebraska. It was named in honor of Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States of America. Its county seat is Fairbury.[1] The population was 8,333 at the 2000 census.

In the Nebraska license plate system, Jefferson County is represented by the prefix 33 (it had the thirty-third-largest number of vehicles registered in the county when the license plate system was established in 1922).

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 576 square miles (1,491.8 km2), of which 573 square miles (1,484.1 km2) is land and 2 square miles (5.2 km2) (0.43%) is water.
