Macon is a city in Macon County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,538 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Macon County[3].

Geography

Macon is located at 39°44′26″N 92°28′14″W / 39.74056°N 92.47056°W / 39.74056; -92.47056 (39.740596, -92.470639)[4]. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.4 square miles (16.6 km²), of which, 6.1 square miles (15.9 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²) of it (4.52%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 5,538 people, 2,434 households, and 1,448 families residing in the city. The population density was 903.9 people per square mile (348.8/km²). There were 2,723 housing units at an average density of 444.4/sq mi (171.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 92.78% White, 5.36% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.88% of the population.

There were 2,434 households out of which 27.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.1% were married couples living together, 10.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.5% were non-families. 37.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.17 and the average family size was 2.82.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 23.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 85.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.3 males.
