Marrero is a census-designated place (CDP) in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. Marrero is on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, within the New OrleansMetairieKenner Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 36,165 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Marrero is located at 29°53′10″N 90°6′36″W / 29.88611°N 90.11°W / 29.88611; -90.11 (29.886017, -90.109930)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.6 square miles (22.2 km²), of which, 8.1 square miles (20.8 km²) of it is land and 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²) of it (5.96%) is water..

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 36,165 people, 12,432 households, and 9,336 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 4,493.3 people per square mile (1,734.6/km²). There were 13,046 housing units at an average density of 1,620.9/sq mi (625.7/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 47.48% White, 47.69% African American, 0.39% Native American, 2.46% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.71% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.12% of the population.

There were 12,432 households out of which 35.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.4% were married couples living together, 23.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.9% were non-families. 21.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.33.
