Matamoras is a village in Washington County, Ohio, United States, along the Ohio River. It is also commonly known as New Matamoras. The population was 957 at the 2000 census.

Matamoras was founded in 1846, named for the Battle of Matamoras in the Mexican-American War. In 1861 the U. S. Post Office in Matamoras changed its name to New Matamoras to avoid confusion with Metamora in Fulton County[3].



Matamoras is located at 39°31′21″N 81°3′54″W / 39.5225°N 81.065°W / 39.5225; -81.065 (39.522451, -81.065084)[4].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km²), of which, 0.4 square miles (0.9 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (7.69%) is water.


As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 957 people, 413 households, and 265 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,656.5 people per square mile (1,026.4/km²). There were 464 housing units at an average density of 1,288.0/sq mi (497.6/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 99.16% White, 0.21% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.10% Asian, and 0.31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.42% of the population.

There were 413 households out of which 28.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.7% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.8% were non-families. 32.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.94.
