Matewan is a town in Mingo County, West Virginia, USA at the confluence of the Tug Fork River and Mate Creek. The population was 498 at the 2000 census. The Norfolk Southern Railway's Pocahontas District runs through town.

Geography

Matewan is located at 37°37′23″N 82°9′59″W / 37.62306°N 82.16639°W / 37.62306; -82.16639 (37.623034, -82.166416)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²), all land.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 498 people, 253 households, and 124 families residing in the town. The population density was 384.6/km² (989.2/mi²). There were 277 housing units at an average density of 213.9/km² (550.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 94.78% White, 3.61% African American, 1.00% Native American, 0.20% Asian, and 0.40% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.00% of the population.

There were 253 households out of which 18.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.4% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 50.6% were non-families. 48.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.97 and the average family size was 2.87.

In the town the population was spread out with 17.7% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 28.9% from 45 to 64, and 20.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 87.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.0 males.
