McClure is a borough in Snyder County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 975 at the 2000 census. The town is named for Alexander McClure.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 3.7 square miles (9.6 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 975 people, 403 households, and 282 families residing in the borough. The population density was 263.6 people per square mile (101.7/km²). There were 441 housing units at an average density of 119.2/sq mi (46.0/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 99.38% White, 0.21% African American, 0.10% Asian, and 0.31% from two or more races.

There were 403 households out of which 27.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.6% were married couples living together, 6.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% were non-families. 25.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.83.

In the borough the population was spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 20.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.6 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $30,865, and the median income for a family was $37,083. Males had a median income of $28,698 versus $25,739 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $15,466. About 4.2% of families and 7.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.6% of those under age 18 and 3.4% of those age 65 or over.

Government

McClure is in the 82nd Legislative District for the Pennsylvania General Assembly held by C. Adam Harris whose office is located on Main St., Middleburg, the county seat. Pennsylvania Senate District 27 is held by Senator John Gordner. McClure is in the United States House of Representatives 10th Congressional District held by Representative Chris Carney. Pennsylvania is represented in the United States Senate by Senator Bob Casey, Jr. and Senator Arlen Specter.
