Monroe County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of 2000, the population was 8,016. Its county seat is Albia.[1]

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 434 square miles (1,124 km²), of which 433 square miles (1,123 km²) is land and 1 square mile (2 km²) (0.16%) is water.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 8,016 people, 3,228 households, and 2,211 families residing in the county. The population density was 18 people per square mile (7/km²). There were 3,588 housing units at an average density of 8 per square mile (3/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 98.40% White, 0.20% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.12% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 0.50% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 3,228 households out of which 30.50% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.20% were married couples living together, 8.60% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.50% were non-families. 28.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.97.
