Saltaire is a village (incorporated) on Fire Island in the southern part of the town of Islip in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The year-round population was 43 at the 2000 census,[1] which, as a summer beach community, increases many times over in the summer.

In early 2009 the village underwent a beach restoration project.[2]


The village is located on the western part of Fire Island between the Great South Bay and the Atlantic Ocean and in-between towns Kismet (West) and Fair Harbor (East) .

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.9 km²), of which, 0.3 square miles (0.7 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (15.15%) is water. Saltaire is known for its great softball league in the summer. The village encompasses the widest portion of Fire Island at approximately 0.5 miles.

There are just over 400 homes in the community[citation needed], including a Village Hall and Court, general market, Fire House, and a members Yacht Club.

Saltaire is the 2nd largest Fire Island community and it is situated on the widest area on the Fire Island map. Fire Island Ferry service to Saltaire leaves from the Bay Shore Fire Island ferry terminal.

Saltaire, like most of Fire Island's villages, consists of boardwalks, concrete walks, and sand paths. Not many full-sized cars are found on the roads. Bicycles are the main form of transportation.
