Santa Ynez is a census-designated place (CDP) in Santa Barbara County, California, United States. The town of Santa Ynez is one of the communities that make up the Santa Ynez Valley, serving general aviation needs for the valley with the paved 2804 x 75 foot Santa Ynez Airport. The population was 4,584 at the 2000 census. It is named after Saint Agnes, Ynez being the former Spanish language spelling.

Geography

Santa Ynez is located at 34°36′43″N 120°5′18″W / 34.61194°N 120.08833°W / 34.61194; -120.08833 (34.612080, -120.088262)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.8 square miles (20.2 km²), none of it covered by water. Santa Ynez is located about 40 miles north of Santa Barbara, CA and is known for its world-class wineries.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 4,584 people, 1,627 households, and 1,277 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 586.7 people per square mile (226.6/km²). There were 1,670 housing units at an average density of 213.7/sq mi (82.6/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 91.84% White, 0.17% African American, 1.22% Native American, 1.29% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.08% from other races, and 2.38% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.21% of the population.

There were 1,627 households out of which 36.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.0% were married couples living together, 7.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.5% were non-families. 15.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.09.
