St. Stephen is a town in Berkeley County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,776 at the 2000 census.

As defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, and used by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes only, St. Stephen is included within the Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville metropolitan area.



St. Stephen is located at 33°24′18″N 79°55′24″W / 33.405°N 79.92333°W / 33.405; -79.92333 (33.405024, -79.923365)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.5 square miles (6.4 km²), all of it land. Today, a large amount of the people who live in this small county, are descendants of the people who have lived their, since the Civil Rights Movement and even going back to when many African Americans were held in slavery. Today, a lot of people in this county are related one way or another, and are spread out all over the country. Some notable people from South Carolina are Peg Leg Sam actor and comedian Chris Rock and a notable descendent from the people of the state, is young family historian, Dennis Richmond Junior.


As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,776 people, 640 households, and 453 families residing in the town. The population density was 722.9 people per square mile (278.7/km²). There were 708 housing units at an average density of 288.2/sq mi (111.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 58.22% African American, 39.92% White, 0.17% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.90% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.52% of the population.
