Washita County is a county located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population was 11,508. Its county seat is New Cordell.[1] It was formerly located in Cloud Chief, Oklahoma.

Washita County is located in that part of western Oklahoma which was included in the Territory of Oklahoma, an organized incorporated territory of the United States that existed from 2 May 1890, until 16 November 1907, when it was joined with the Indian territory and admitted to the Union as the State of Oklahoma.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,009 square miles (2,613 km²), of which 1,003 square miles (2,599 km²) is land and 6 square miles (15 km²) (0.57%) is water.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 11,508 people, 4,506 households, and 3,266 families residing in the county. The population density was 12 people per square mile (4/km²). There were 5,452 housing units at an average density of 5 per square mile (2/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 92.31% White, 0.43% Black or African American, 2.97% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.18% from other races, and 1.82% from two or more races. 4.48% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 95.3% spoke English, 3.5% Spanish and 1.3% German as their first language.

There were 4,506 households out of which 33.60% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.00% were married couples living together, 8.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.50% were non-families. 25.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.00.
