Whitwell is a city in Marion County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,660 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chattanooga, TN–GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.



Whitwell was incorporated as a city in 1956.[3]


Whitwell is located at 35°11′51″N 85°31′9″W / 35.1975°N 85.51917°W / 35.1975; -85.51917 (35.197570, -85.519082)[4], in the Sequatchie Valley.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.3 square miles (8.6 km²), of which, 3.3 square miles (8.6 km²) of it is land and 0.30% is water.


As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,660 people, 727 households, and 482 families residing in the city. The population density was 500.1 people per square mile (193.1/km²). There were 786 housing units at an average density of 236.8/sq mi (91.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.35% White, 2.17% African American, 0.30% from other races, and 0.18% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60% of the population.

There were 727 households out of which 24.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.5% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% were non-families. 30.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.85.
