Wichita County (standard abbreviation: WH) is a county located in the U.S. state of Kansas. As of 2000, the population was 2,531. Its county seat is Leoti.[1]

The county should not be confused with the city of Wichita, which is located roughly 250 road miles (400 km) away, in south-central Kansas.

Law and government

Although the Kansas Constitution was amended in 1986 to allow the sale of alcoholic liquor by the individual drink with the approval of voters, Wichita County has remained a prohibition, or "dry", county.[2]

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 719 square miles (1,861 km²), none of which is water.

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 2,531 people, 967 households, and 723 families residing in the county. The population density was 4 people per square mile (1/km²). There were 1,119 housing units at an average density of 2 per square mile (1/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 86.25% White, 0.08% Black or African American, 0.71% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 10.51% from other races, and 2.37% from two or more races. 18.41% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
