Crystals on carbon
Jason Krizan (graduate student)
Department of Chemistry
This picture is of different topological insulators over a bed of carbon. These materials display recently discovered quantum phenomena at low temperature where electrons have entangled spin states. These physics could eventually lead to the construction of quantum computers. The reflections of color off the crystal facets show the nearly perfect cleavage planes of the crystal - these were not cut and polished. The carbon is used in the synthesis of these materials as a purifying agent.
