The Future
As of the beginning of the 1996-1997 school year at Princeton, the
entire model of the Hagia Sophia and Christ in Chora is complete, along
with the landscape of Istanbul and all of the city walls except for the
outer land wall. The next major step will be to apply photo images to
the walls of the new Pro/ENGINEER models. The photos have been taken,
and need only to be scanned in and then placed using Pro/PHOTORENDER, a
program within the Pro/ENGINEER software package. At this point in
time, there
is no way to view the entire city on the computer, and so another major
project will be to create an interface that will allow users to view the
models. Quite probably, this will be a touch-sensative 2-D map of the
city that would allow one to enter and "fly through" various componants
of Constantinople. Should the hardware become available one day (the
parallel processing SHRIMP project at the Princeton Computer Science
Department, for example),
complete walk throughs of the city will be possible.
