The most important sentence in any paragraph is the first one. If it doesn't induce the reader to proceed to the second sentence, the paragraph is dead. And if the second paragraph doesn't induce him or her to continue to the third sentence, it is equally dead. Continue to build. Use your paragraphs to separate your argument into manageable units of comprehension for your reader. Each paragraph should convey the fact that it is integral to your paper, and every paragraph should amplify the one that preceded it. But take special care with the last sentence of the paragraph--it is the crucial springboard to the next building block in your argument. That springboard can be a continuation, a shift, or an ironic twist in your thesis, and it is the occasion when you must ask yourself, "What relation will my next idea have to the one that I've just finished, and how can I best convey that relationship to my reader?"
