Art

Art is not often thought of in the same context as science, but the relationship between them is there. Whether the connection is as great as Seurat's study of the wave theory of light or as nonobvious as when the work of an artist is profoundly influenced by discoveries made on the scientific front, as is the case with Kandinsky.

This influence does not run one-way, however. Many scientists, especially those interested in vision such as David Marr, study how the viewer perceives art. This relationship is studied by others as well, including Gombrich.

Art, however, cannot be wholly quantified. Though many artists are scientific and systematic about their art, the works they produce affect us in much more profound ways than can be easily discussed. Within this section, we attempt to determine both the scientific aspects of the art and those aspects which cannot be reduced to such terms.
