Philosophy of Physics Seminar

Topics in the Foundations of Quantum Field Theory

Seminar leader: Hans Halvorson

We meet Mondays 3:00pm to 5:50pm in Marx Hall, Room 201. The first meeting on September 19. There will be no meeting on October 31 or November 7. On October 17, Laura Ruetsche will be guest speaker.

Seminar description

We will work through Laura Ruetsche's book Interpreting Quantum Theories, as well as some supporting materials.

In the first session, HH will present material from Chapter 2 “Quantizing”. In the second session, HH will present material from Chapter 3 “Beyond the Stone-von Neumann Theorem”, and we will possibly begin with on the more advanced mathematical material in Chapter 4. (Supporting material for Chap 4: Bär and Becker, C*-algebras)

Requirements

This is a co-op seminar in the following sense: if you attend regularly, then you are strongly encouraged — indeed expected — to lead one of the sessions. Especially if you are a graduate student in Princeton's Philosophy Department, you should feel pressure to volunteer. Undergraduate students should talk to HH about getting credit for the course.
