Translation Stage and Controller

The thermocouple probe for the flame temperature measurements can be moved to various locations in the flame by means of a translation stage with two degrees of freedom. This stage has its own controller and this is programmed using a simple keyboard language. A printed explanation of this language is provided with the controller.

In deciding on how much of the flame to probe, examine the flame structure and remember that the region at which the combustion reaction initiates is of particular interest. Try and make temperature scans that go from the non-reacting to the combustion side of the flame front. Select your step size so that you can obtain a temperature profile through this zone and see how this depends on the stoichiometry of the reactants.
