Fuel Cell Cathode

The cathode is the positive electrode of the fuel cell. At this electrode the protons transported through the Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) react with the atomic oxygen produced by catalytic dissociation of O₂ . The electrons from the external circuit participate in this reaction creating neutral water molecules.

The cathode side of the PEM is catalyst coated to facilitate the oxygen dissociation reaction.
