The Wright
brothers (US) made several gliders before developing the power plant that
made the first powered flight a reality in 1904. The sketch above shows their
biplane glider No. 3 that employed the control techniques that were to be
used in the powered aircraft. The forward elevator controls the pitch, the
rear rudder the yaw, and warping the wings the roll of the craft. This glider
made about 1000 flights during which the Wright brothers realized that in
order to minimize the drag caused by warping the wings it was necessary to employ
the warp, roll, and yaw controls in concert |
