The infrastructure associated with a canalized waterway can be extensive. The plan and photograph show the cascade of locks on the Canal du Midi at Fonserannes near Beziers at the Mediterranean end of the canal. The seven locks climb the steepest part of the canal terrain, and the sequence design was selected to economize in the masonry and wood required for the basins and lock gates. The gates open in the up-stream direction and water pressure improves their sealing as the lower chamber is emptied.
