The stress distribution in the matrix and the fiber in the region of a fiber break is illustrated.

The interfacial shear stress between the fiber and the matrix is a maximum at the break and decreases to zero over the transfer length for the system.

The tensile stress in the fiber is zero at the break, increases to its maximum value over the transfer length, and remains constant over the region of the fiber in the isostrain state.
