The Structure of Solids

· The Coordination Number is also the same for the fcc and hcp lattices. Coordination Number = Number of Nearest Neighbors.
· In both the fcc and hcp lattice there are six neighbors in a plane, with three in the plane above this plane, and three in the plane below to give a Coordination Number of 12.
· The fcc and hcp lattices differ in their next-nearest-neighbor configurations.
· In the fcc lattice, the A plane has B and C next-nearest-neighbors, etc..
· In the hcp lattice the A plane has atoms in A locations as next-nearest-neighbors.
