The Structure of Solids
The Structure of Ceramics
· Ionic Bonding is important in Ceramics and involves non-directional bonding between atoms of different size.
· Many ionic compounds have anions (-) that are larger than the cations (+) in the structure.
· The lowest Madelung energy occurs when the cation (+) is surrounded by as many anions (-) as possible consistent with structural stability
· Pauling's Stability Rule provides guidelines to the allowed structures based on the ratio of anion to cation radius.
