Elastic Issues in Design

· Joining components can exploit the elastic properties of their material. A wheel/shaft system that is to be coupled by a friction fit is shown.
· If the parts are machined so that a hydraulic press can push the shaft into the wheel central hole, the resulting interference fit has high enough inter-component friction forces to retain this configuration during use.
· An alternate approach is to heat the wheel or/and cool the shaft so that their thermal expansion permits easy insertion of the axle into the wheel. Bringing the system to room temperature forms a strong tension/ compression friction bond.
