In an electrochemical cell with two electrodes, the anode is formed by the material with the most negative electrochemical potential. In this configuration the anode will tend to corrode in an anodic reaction of the type:
                                          2M -> 2M2+ + 4e-
The metal goes into solution as a charged metal ion and the electrons are provided by the anode.  The giving up of electrons by the anode is known as an oxidation reaction
