Cathode, Cathodic
Index
In an electrochemical cell with two electrodes, the cathode is formed by the material with the less negative electrochemical potential. In this configuration, this electrode is more resistant to corrosion. At the cathode reactions of the type: 2H+ + 2e _ -> H2 (gas) take place. These reduction reactions consume electrons that are provided by the cathode to the species in the electrolyte and are said to be cathodic.
