Ionic Solid
Index
An ionic solid is bonded by electrostatic interactions between its constituent ions. These are compound materials and include the alkali halides and some oxides. In general, they are high melting point materials.

The diagram shows the fcc crystal structure of NaCl that has a basis of one Na and one Cl ion. The hard sphere model shows the {1 0 0} planes of the crystal and contains more than a single unit cell.
