| An isotropic material is one for which all properties are independent of direction in the material. The concept depends upon the length scale at which it is applied. At length scales that are much larger than atomic dimensions an amorphous material (glass) will be isotropic. Also a fine grain polycrystalline material will have isotropic properties that arise from averages over all possible orientations of the individual grains. | |||||||
