A
crystal structure is associated with a Bravais lattice and may be generated
by repeating the unit cell of the structure throughout space. The cell
shown in the diagram is characterized by three lattice vectors, a, b, c,
and three angles a, b, g.
These are known as the Lattice Parameters of the structure.
In recording data from a crystal structure determination the symmetry of the structure is normally identified by giving the lattice group (fcc, hcp, tetragonal, etc.) and the lattice constants a, b, c. In many cases, lattice symmetry reduces the number of distinct constants and a, or a and c/a will be reported. |
