Hydroxyl, OH
Index
The hydroxide ion is a prototypical base, a substance that will accept a hydrogen ion (proton) according to the Bronstead -Lowry definition. When OH - accepts an H+ ion it forms the water molecule, H2O.

Hydroxyl groups are important in reducing the surface energy of ceramic materials such as a glass and therefore lower the fracture stress of these brittle materials.

Hydroxyl groups are monofunctional groups and participate in polymerization processes as chain terminators or condensation sites.
