Slip Vector, s
Index
The diagram shows a slip process in a simple cubic crystal of hard sphere atoms. The slip plane is one of the {1 0 0 } planes of the crystal and the displacement of the material above the slip plane with respect to the material below the slip plane is given by the slip vector, s. Slip is initiated when the resolved shear stress (represented by the red arrows) in the slip direction becomes larger than the critical shear stress for the crystal. The slip process takes the atoms above the slip plane from one stable location in the lattice to another stable location.
