Tantalum is a metal in group VB of the periodic table with atomic number 73, an atomic weight of 180.95, and a density of 16.6 Mg/m3. Its melting point is 2996 C, and it boils at 5425 C.

The electronic configuration of Tantalum is (Xe)(4f14)(5d3)(6s2). Its atomic radius is 0.149 nm and the (+5) ionic radius is 0.073 nm.

In the solid state Tantalum has a body-centered cubic crystal structure with a = 0.330 nm and a nearest neighbor distance of 0.285 nm.

Tantalum has a Young's modulus of 186 GPa, a yield stress of 331MPa, and a UTS of 413 MPa. The linear coefficient of thermal expansion is 6.48 m/m/K and the thermal conductivity is 0.575 W/cm/K.
