Titanium-Silicon Carbide, Ti-SiC
Index
Titanium, with a melting point of 1670 C, is a good matrrix material for high temperature composite materials. A high temperature fiber material is required to provide the reinforcement of the matrix. Silicon carbide prepared as a monofilament is a suitable candidate for this application. The photograph shows a SiC fiber reinforced Ti matrix, with the SiC fibers running normal to the plane of the picture.

The sample shown was prepared by DERA (Defence Evaluation and Research Agency) which is an agency of the UK Ministry of Defence, incorporating the bulk of the UK Ministry of Defence’s non-nuclear research, technology and test and evaluation establishments.
