“Exploring
Careers in Chemistry"
Carol Lee, PhD
- Chemistry Teacher, Princeton High School
In 1978, with a
PhD in organic chemistry from Cornell, Carol Lee
began working for Mobil Oil in the short-lived
agricultural chemicals division. She enjoyed a wide
variety of jobs in research, manufacturing, and
marketing before retiring from Mobil in 1999, when
Mobil and Exxon merged. With only a little
experience as a substitute teacher and one course on
teaching high school science at TCNJ, she began
teaching at Princeton High School in 2000, and
secured her teaching certificate through NJ’s
Alternate Route program. Carol currently teaches
AP Chemistry and Chemistry in Context, a course for
“mathaphobes” at Princeton High School.
Ned Haubein, PhD-
Senior Scientist, The BioAnalytics Group
Dr. Haubein, has
been instrumental in developing The BioAnalytics
Group’s image analysis applications and its
BioPathwise™ software product. The software and
consulting system offers an innovative graphical
user interface for integrating biological pathways
with complex datasets for biological researchers,
clinical developers, and drug safety analysts. A
chemical engineer with a Bachelor’s degree from the
University of Delaware and a PhD from Northwestern
University, Dr. Haubein has worked in the forefront
of modeling development throughout his career.
During his tenure at Physiome Sciences in Princeton,
NJ, he leveraged his leadership skills working with
software developers, the bioinformatics team, and
management. After two years as the chief scientist
at BIOSoftware Systems in Camden, NJ, where he was
responsible for setting up initial company
operations, he joined The BioAnalytics Group and is
now part of the senior management team.
Sharon Ma, PhD -
Patent
Manager, Johnson & Johnson
Sharon Ma began her
professional career, as a post-doctoral associate, in
drug discovery R&D at Novartis Corporation, conducting
structure-function study of proteins. She then took some
time off from active chemistry research to raise two
boys, now age 17 and 14, while staying connected with
the professional world by conducting academic research
at Princeton University, and of course, being a ACS
member. In 1999, Sharon reactivated her full time
career as a patent scientist at Ethicon, a Johnson &
Johnson company. She is now a patent manager at Johnson
& Johnson Group of Consumer Companies, Inc. Sharon holds
a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Peking University,
China, a PhD in Physical Organic Chemistry from Arizona
State University, and is registered and licensed with
the United State Patent and Trademark Office. She has
enjoyed a variety of careers in chemistry.
