October 24, 2001: Snapshot

Press Check

By Josephine Sittenfeld ’02

At midnight on September 30, Daily Princetonian editors (from left) Ben Grossman ’02, Mike Grabell ’03, and Dan Stephens ’02 were wrestling over captions to accompany their coverage of President Tilghman’s installation, trying to remember, for example, the name of the university’s mace bearer. (It’s English professor Tom Roche *58, as they eventually recalled.) “We were focusing on the way the university community came together for the event and how its style was a product of President Tilghman’s personality and goals,” said editor-in-chief Stephens, a history major from Bethesda, Maryland. “It’s a very rare event for the university to be installing a new president, so of course it has a lot of news value in itself, but we were especially interested in how it differed from past installations, to give us a sense for what a Tilghman presidency might be like.”
