Wrestlemania

By Allen Taylor ’02

Following more than 100-year-old tradition, Allison Arensman ’04 and Brittany Hume ’05 — old friends from Louisville, Kentucky — vie for control of a cane during the 2001 Cane Spree. Originally a haphazard, often violent tussle between freshmen carrying forbidden canes and sophomores struggling to wrest them away, the annual October Cane Spree eventually became formalized and by 1948 included softball, touch football, a track meet, and a tug-of-war as well as the traditional battle for the canes (in four weight classes). This year’s Spree featured 18 events ranging from table tennis and badminton to golf and rugby, and an estimated 1,500 students participated. As usual, the sophomores won.
