A letter from a reader about Truth value, functional value, and diversity

March 23 , 2007

In support of diversity (cover story, Feb. 14), let me adduce the following: The truth value of an assertion depends not at all upon the notation in which it is expressed, nor upon the race or national origin of the party employing the notation. Functional value is not dependent upon structural components. A coal miner’s desire for a canary finds no counterpart in a truth-seeker’s naive resort to structural features for guidance, a la the reading of entrails that we need not revive.
