A letter from a reader about Jack Duys ’49

May 22, 2003

I was sorry to read of the death of Jack Duys ’49.

My grandfather, Joe Dimlow of Manchester, Conneciticut, worked as a field supervisor for the family business in the 30s 40s and 50s: H. Duys & Company, Inc., 76 Beaver St., New York 5, NY. The business also had offices in Havana, Massacusetts, and Amsterdam.

My grandfather worked the shade-grown tobacco division in the Connecticut River Valley with Jack's brother David. My grandfather was a man of modest means, and when he died of a heart attack in his early 50s, in about 1956, the Duys Company (Henry Duys) forgave my grandmother the mortgage they held on his house. This money was passed on to her granchildren and is in part, the reason I live in a very comfortable home today. A deed never forgotten!

Cheers,
Jim Sloan
